SIDE BY SIDE is a range of products that we consider to be very special indeed - because of its particular provenance. Administered under Caritas, it is a collaboration of nine different sheltered workshops, based around Germany, for the intellectually and physically disabled. Their mission: to combine good design with useful, everyday objects whilst also providing meaningful employment for their charges. Commissioning the ideas & talent of bright, young designers they have developed range of functional products that epitomise pure simplicity, a pared backed aesthetic & high quality. Their success is to be seen in the well resolved, beautifully hand-crafted result.
Note: all Side by Side products include a swing tag/ info label explaining the workshop and its goals and most come packaged in a ‘kraft’ carton labelled with their signature orange & white.

Wine Light (aka Wind Light)
These are simply (& literally!) the hottest, grooviest & greenest hurricane / tea light holders ever!
The humble wine bottle cleverly re-configured: the glass top half perfectly matched to a solid, hand-turned base of European oak. The latter precisely grooved to hold the equally humble tea-light. The result is a simply elegant tea light holder for indoors, that is also just perfect for outdoor use…

Smart 'n' Green Planter
Plant a little cress / micro-leaf garden on a window sill or a warm sunlit spot in the kitchen… Simply lay cotton or a paper towel in the dish & place the seeds on, keep them moist and it's ready to eat in a week (or transplant bought punnets into something that looks so much better and add a dash of organic decoration!). Then, snip as needed for sandwiches, salads, a garnish…The gardener and pig embellishment will love it too!

Small Board
‘Traditionally’ this small wooden board is used for having breakfast or a snacking on - in northern Europe particularly. This beautifully crafted laser engraved version inscribed with either “delicious” or “make my day” is a small board / platter for people with style: for cheese, dips, antipasti etc. or try making and having a sandwich on it...

WINE Butler
This elegant rack is useful in several ways: transporting bottles from wine storage area to kitchen, dining room or table, safely; and / or to present the drinking selection, with a meal, very smartly indeed; or for storing, displaying, (showing off!) a special range in a particular spot.

BREAD BOX & BOARD
Beautifully crafted, generously proportioned bread storage with a lid that doubles as a slicing board - conveniently grooved to catch crumbs. A perfect match made in bread heaven! Constructed in solid untreated maple & smoked oak with a textile inlay.

COOKING TONGS & ANTIPASTI TONGS
The tongs are beautifully crafted from Walnut (wood) with a subtle oiled finish. The larger ‘cooking’ tongs are solid, durable & substantially sized; the smaller ‘antipasti’ tongs are slender & fine as befitting their intended purpose… The result is quite gripping!

Spoon & Rest
A dead simple idea: a self-resting wooden cooking spoon handily equipped with a silicon disc & a weighted s/steel cap placed strategically to allow the spoon to balance itself at the ‘right’ end perfectly. The trad wooden spoon with a clever twist! Crafted from Cherry wood (with a natural oiled finish).

Spice Rack "Gourmet"
A very tasteful rack, crafted to a very clean finish & executed in solid Oak, to store favourite condiments and spices or for showing off an array of new and exotic gourmet spices out there. This rack can be wall-mounted or alternatively, left free standing.

EXTENDABLE TRIVETS
Extending and retracting trivet – essential kitchenware for placing hot pots, filled with just off the stove soups & stews & slow braises…. Fittingly made of walnut (wood) they have a natural oiled finish. Smoothly hinged, they compact effectively for storage. They are available in two sizes.
